Two minutes before I released my final class of the day, Ryann walked in unannounced. Suddenly, all my student’s attention was off me and on her. For two seconds my heart dropped to my stomach and I thought something horrible happened to Tisa and the twins, but the expression on Ryann’s face was calm and remote. She was her usual beautiful pristine self, although she’d surprised me by showing up here. I couldn’t recall a time when Ryann willingly step foot on this campus. I had to clear my throat before speaking.

“Class dismissed.”

Ryann moved away from the door as the forty-one college students rushed down to leave. Silently she made her way toward the podium where I was gathering my papers back into my bag. My head snapped up when I heard one zealous male approach her.

“Hi, I don’t remember seeing you on campus. I’m Adam. And you are…” He held out his hand trying to catch Ryann’s gaze. She gave it fleetingly but refused his hand. Many others looked on waiting to see if she would turn Adam down. Waiting to see if they would get a chance. Males were appropriately salivating. The Females were sneering giving side eyed glares before walking away.

Ryann stood stiff as a statue looking directly at me. I knew I wasn’t as handsome as many of these young guys, but there she stood haughty, remote, and aloof.

“My daughter,” I barked back at all of them staring, approaching, and desperately trying to pluck up the nerve to make the attempt. “I said get out of here unless you want me to assign more homework.”

That had the lot of them scrambling to get out of the door. I sighed looking back at Ryann and saw her physically relax. Her body uncoiled loosening the tightness in her stance. She licked her lips and started looking around as if curious about her surroundings. Before her eyes remained on me, had all that male attention frighten her, made her nervous?

“Make me come before we get to my school so I’m not so tense when everyone starts staring.”

Had she meant that literally?

“Is everything alright honey.”

I could see her haughty smirk as she looked from one wall to the next. There were pictures of writers and poets from every era donning my walls.

“My daughter… Really John?” And just like that, the untouchable ice queen was back.

“What are you doing here Ryann?”

She turned to me then. “You don’t have a car and I do, so the obvious answer would be… I’m here to give you a ride home.”

We were in New York, Manhattan. I didn’t need a car. Ryann had a car that came with a driver. She didn’t have a driver’s license and I wasn’t certain if she even knew how to drive. I decided not to respond to that. My mind was still on her reaction to all that male attention. Besides that, I had been thinking about her all day long. Thinking about what I would do to her tonight.
